Brothers in song: traditional Rromani songs for mulatšago celebrations

Mulatšago is very important social event or celebration among  Rroma people from Harangos  in which Rrom song was produced. The point of participating in mulatšago was to make " true speech" to each other. Music making was the aspect of Rromani culture that had contributed more than any other to non-Rroma's image of them. The music activity of the Rroma inside the communities was very different from that the Rroma performed for outsiders and music making had a quite other purpose. Even there were many adopted elements from the world outside, they reteined their own sense of what it meant to make music together. It was by joining in mulatšagos that men atempted to create a world in wich they respected each other, by singing together they manage to transcedent many of daily  problems, if only temporarily, and create image of more easy and pleasent way of life. Mulatšago is succesfull if the mood or Voja cames  durring the celebration. Song is medium in wich the Rrom expressed their deepest feelings and attachments. The songs sung by individuals when they were moved to do so were often highly personal laments and had consist particular events in the speaker's life. These celebrations were seen by Rrom as one of their defining features as well as it is to celebrate equallity. At the mulatšago, it only man who are invited, though occasionally an elder woman would participate. For mulatšago, huge quantities of food were cooked include unleavened bread so colled- boxoli. These communal  eating and drinking have a very important role durring mulatšago. Successful mulatšago demanded the participation of all the men present and the partial submission of each individual to the collective will, the integration of his acts with the rhytm of the group. The greeting in the mulatšago as the beginning of vorba ( speach) was a hiddenn request for silence. All Rrom songs had to be true ( čačo ). This held for songs sung in daily life by man and woman, as well as those performed in the mulatšago. In one sense it is an expression of truest feelings. Singing together succesfully, they integrate individual and communal aspect of songs.. There are no instrumentalists in this mulatšago. Loki djili or slow songs involved no contrapuntal forms, no polyphony, no form that allowed significant structural individuations of performes. But also if individual would performe the same song that was performed by another person, it would be singing differently and improvisation is allowed. Not only that some man are associated with one song but he also would tend to personalize its performance by improvising within it both musically and textually. As a result, the songs did not have an absolutely fixed shape. That one man sang a song in one way was reason enough for another man to try it differently and attempt to show that his version was more pleasing.. It just did not make sense to Rrom to sing in a given way because another individual had done so before.. He felt free to express himself  and to show that in song as in everything else, no one commanded him.
