Winter – the mysterious time when the young seed lies
under it's white blanket of snow, preparing for it's spring flowering ...the
time when the wheels stand still, and people are drawn indoors by the fire ...
the time of fairy tales and stories, of reflection and exuberant festivals with
singing and dance to shake the frost from chilled limbs ... and sometimes
sharing the distress of body and soul ...
Once, the nomadic musicians were sought at this time of
year by hostels and grand houses, where they would stay and enjoy shelter and
warmth for the long winter, as guests of their hosts – or to put it another
way, they paid for their lodgings by providing a long season of entertainment
on demand! It is also the time of the candles decorated the salons and of
romantic and beautiful musical stage shows ...
Our winter dance school is inspired by this history and
atmosphere.
During our weekend of workshops, we will deal with the
four pillars of gypsy music theatre: dance, singing, solo and ensemble playing.
Of course, we would be delighted for you to spend the whole weekend with us,
but you can also book the workshops individually if you prefer. By popular
demand, for the first time we are providing workshops suitable for men wishing
to learn the Gipsy style! FOR EXAMPLE – you can learn Russian or Polish version
of the famous male Romano Stepp first hand, or participate in our singing
workshop! On Saturday evening we invite everybody to our Romano Bijav (Gipsy
Celebration) and party!
For Friday night (02/07/2013) we have planned an
inaugural concert for our ROMANY WINTER DANCE SCHOOL.

The Faculty
Besides Anna
Debicka and Katjusha Kozubek,
for the first time we welcome the singer and dancer ARTUR SZEWCZYK – longtime
soloist of the Polish Roma Music Theatre TERNO. This fantastic artist has
worked as a soloist and choreographer in professional Russian and Polish Roma
performance groups since the age of fourteen! With his family he founded the
ensemble THAGAR, which includes his son DAMIAN SZEWCZYK who will accompany the
workshops of Romany Dance Winter School with live piano.

(RDWS 1) Gipsy Wings, Steps & Attitude
For woman only!
The Khelipo Romano ( Roma folk dance) of women has
changed a lot on the way to the Russian and Polish theatres. The typical steps
& the shoulder shimmy, jumps, twists and spontaneity - were joined by
expansive dance movements with the arms, hands and gorgeous skirts. With this
come the proud bearing and elegance of classical ballet. In this workshop you
will learn it all.

(RDWS 2) Singing Workshop „Red roses on white
snow ...”

So once the Russian poet Alexander Kuprin called the
songs of Russka Roma. An old saying goes that the Russians would die for two
things - for their country and for a gypsy song. In this workshop we will sing
to you the songs of Russka and Polska Roma and already develop into the first
dance sequences. After a short solo performance you will immerse yourself in
the magic of choral singing and the famous Zigeunerterzen ( Gipsy choirs ). We
will show you historical and contemporary film clips of performances by famous
Roma ensembles from the extensive archive of Artur Szewczyk . We will make you
aware of some of their acclaimed soloists and tell you the story of the Russian
gypsy song from its beginnings until the present day.

O Romano Bijav – Gipsy Celebration
(For women, men, children)
This is an evening event with our project participants,
friends and guests of the UFA Fabrik, and intended as a party and feast for us!
Together we will celebrate life: sing, dance, tell stories and enjoy culinary
delights from the Eastern European Romani kitchen. There will also be a short
show with our lecturers, and you are invited to show your own skills as well -
so please bring anything that you need in order to perform!

(RDWS 3) Romano Stepp & Trapatshok
Damian & Artur SzewczykThis is the ultimate
workshop for all who want to try, and to learn, the male part in Roma dance!
Unlike the dances of the women, the men's dance has hardly changed from the
original Khelipo Romano ( Roma folk dance) to the dance now performed on stage.
The mans dance – also in contrast to the style of the women - is similar in
most regions of the world. In its expressiveness, elegance and speed, Romano
quilt is dominated by the personality of the dancer or group of dancers. While
Artur Szewczyk will instruct you on Romano Stepp, Anna Debicka will show in
parallel the appropriate sequence of steps for the other dancers.

4) Romano Teatro & Lets dance together!
(For women and men)
Here we will bring together all the elements of Romany
Dance Winter School: Singing, Romano Stepp, Trapatshok, Gipsy Wings...solo
improvisations, couple dances, ensemble dances and different variations of the
presentation you will learn here, in order to bring your glorious „Gypsy Show”
to the stage! This workshop will be followed by a Romano photo shoot with you
and our artist! (Katjusha Kozubek)
