UN expert to publish findings into Khashoggi killing on 26 June at Human Rights Council

GENEVA (18 June 2019) – The UN Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions, Agnes Callamard, will present her findings into the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi to the Human Rights Council in Geneva on 26 June 2019.

The Special Rapporteur will hold a news conference at Palais de Nations, Salle III, Geneva on 26 June 2019 at 1pm (local time). Access will be strictly limited to accredited journalists. For all media accreditation requests, please register with the United NationsOffice of Geneva .

The findings of the Special Rapporteur will be released online on the Human Rights Council reports page on 19 June 2019.

Under the terms of her mandate, Ms. Callamard undertook an international human rights inquiry into the case of Mr. Khashoggi with a view to look into the nature and extent of States’ and individuals’ responsibilities and assess steps taken by States to address and respond to the killing..

Ms. Callamard was appointed as Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions by the United Nations Human Rights Council and mandated under resolution 35/15 to examine situations of extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions in all circumstances, and to submit her findings on an annual basis, together with conclusions and recommendations, to the Human Rights Council and the General Assembly.

Pursuant to resolutions of the Human Rights Council, she is mandated to investigate incidents of human rights violations falling within her mandate, report back to the Human Rights Council and draw its attention, as well as that of the UN General Assembly and other UN bodies, to serious violations that warrant immediate attention. The Special Rapporteur serves in her personal capacity. She is independent from any government, the UN or any other party.

Ms. Agnes Callamard (France), Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions, has a distinguished career in human rights and humanitarian work globally. Ms. Callamard is the Director of Columbia Global Freedom of Expression at Columbia University and has previously worked with Article 19 and Amnesty International. She has advised multilateral organizations and governments around the world, has led human rights investigations in more than 30 countries, and has published extensively on human rights and related fields.
